How to Change Password in Yahoo Mail Account?

In order to keep your Yahoo account safe and secure against cyber attacks, the basic step is to create a complex and unique password for your account. Having an easy-to-guess password for your account, such as your date of birth, name, surname, etc., can let hackers intrude into your account easily. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to create a password with a combination of alphabets, numbers, and special characters.

If you don’t know how to change the password for your Yahoo account, we have provided below step-by-step instructions, along with several tips and tricks to make your Yahoo account more secure against cyber attacks.

Steps to Change Yahoo Mail Password

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo account and move your mouse cursor to your Profile Name. This will open a small menu on your screen.
  2. From the menu that appears on your screen, click on the Account info option. This will direct you to the Account info page.
  3. Under the Account info page, click on the Account security option from the left-hand side panel.
NOTE: Clicking on the Account security option may prompt you to enter your password in order to get access to that section.
  4. Once you are under the Account security page, click on the Change password option located on the right-hand side. On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your new password.
  5. Enter your new password in the provided fields and click on the Continue button. Your password for your Yahoo account will be changed.
NOTE:

Occasionally, clicking on the Change password option may prompt you to Use a Yahoo Account Key instead of a password to access your account. You can click on the “Continue” button to use the Account Key feature, or you can click on the “I would rather change my password” option to create a new password for your Yahoo account.

Also, when creating a new password, make sure to make a combination of alphabets, numbers, and special characters.

How to Make Use of Yahoo Account Security Features

To make your account more secure, you can enable two-step verification as well to your Yahoo account. The two-step verification feature works as an additional security layer that sends a security code each time to your phone number when you or someone else (for example, a hacker) try to sign in to your Yahoo account from a new device.

Steps to Enable Two-Step Verification

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo account.
  2. Go to your Profile name > Account info > Account Security option.
  3. Click on the Slider button next to the Two-step verification option.
  4. Enter your Mobile number on the next screen and click on either the Send SMS button or the Call Me button to receive a verification code.
  5. Enter the verification code in the prompted field on the next page and click on the Verify button.
  6. You will see Success! message on the subsequent screen. Two-step verification will become active on your Yahoo account.
NOTE:

Along with the Success message, you will also be prompted to create an app password in case you use apps such as Outlook and iOS Mail. This is because these apps don’t support two-step verification and require an app password to access a Yahoo account.

To generate app passwords, click on the Create app passwords (on the “Success” page) and follow the on-screen instructions to generate an app password. If you don’t use any such application to access your Yahoo account, simply click on the Skip for now option.

Moreover, in case you ever need to generate an app password in the future, you can do it easily by following the below-mentioned steps.

Steps to Generate App Password

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo account.
  2. Go to your Profile name > Account info > Account Security option.
  3. Click on the Generate app passwords option located below the Two-step verification feature.
  4. On the next page, select your application from the list under the “Select your app” option and click on the Generate button.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
